Historian Bert Sugar ranked Robinson as the greatest fighter of all time and in 2002, Robinson was also ranked number one on The Ring magazine’s list of “80 Best Fighters of the Last 80 Years”. As of July 2023, BoxRec ranks Robinson as the greatest boxer, pound-for-pound, of all time. He was named the best boxer of all time, pound for pound, by the International Boxing Research Organization (IBRO) in both of its all-time ratings, in 2006 and 2019.
It was Tyson’s 50th professional win and his 44th KO (not counting the stoppage of Andrew Golota, which was changed to a no contest after Tyson failed the post-fight drug test for marijuana). It was also the final victory of his career.
On Tyson’s right arm is a detailed portrait of Mao Zedong, the Chinese revolutionary leader. Tyson chose this tattoo as a symbol of rebellion and resilience, traits he saw in himself. The tattoo reflects Tyson’s interest in socialist and revolutionary ideologies, showcasing his alignment with figures who disrupted the status quo.
Born and raised at Jacksons Track in Victoria as well as the town of Warragul, Rose grew up in hardship and learned to box from his father, Roy, who was a skilled fighter at local house shows. Rose was of the Gunditjmara (Dhauwurd Wurrung) people.
Mercer had planned to attempt a dabble in mixed martial arts as early as 2003; he was scheduled to Kazuyuki Fujita, who was 9-4 in the sport, in Kobe, Japan as the main event of the Inoki Bom-Ba-Ye. The fight was to be in a MMA ring. However the bout was cancelled after Mercer missed his flight to the country.
Wilder comes from a family of Alabama preachers, namely his father and grandmother. He has three sisters and one younger brother. His brother Marsellos Wilder, is also a professional boxer; Marsellos currently fights in the cruiserweight featherweight division boxing and has a 5–3 record. As a youngster, Wilder attended church every week. He has referred to his belief in Christianity, saying that “God is very important in my life.”
Robinson married Marjorie Joseph in 1938; the marriage was annulled the same year. Their son, Ronnie Smith, was born on September 25, 1938. Robinson met his second wife Edna Mae Holly, a noted dancer who performed at the Cotton Club and toured Europe with Duke Ellington and Cab Calloway. According to Robinson, he met her at a local pool he frequented after his boxing workouts. In an attempt to get her attention he pushed her into the pool one day, and said it was an accident. After this attempt was met with disdain, he appeared at the nightclub she danced at and introduced himself. Soon the couple were dating and they married in 1944. They had one son, Ray Robinson Jr. (born 1949) before their acrimonious divorce in 1962.
The bout was first scheduled for July 20 but was postponed after Tyson, who had a scare on a flight from Miami to Los Angeles on May 26, and needed to receive medical attention, was advised to rest and to not return to training for a few weeks.
In August 2005, Etienne robbed a local business, tried to hijack two cars (one containing a woman and her child), then pulled a gun on police officers. He reportedly tried to fire the weapon only for it to jam. After being convicted of armed robbery, kidnapping and the attempted murder of a police officer, Etienne was sentenced to 160 years in prison (later reduced to 105 years due to a technicality).
Within a few years, it was gone, and he declared bankruptcy, mainly due to his many addictions and reckless spending. He had hit rock-bottom, sifting his way through a mountain of debt, when, seemingly out of nowhere, he started an acting career and the comeback began.
While Tyson’s tattoo isn’t a traditional Maori face tattoo, it draws inspiration from tribal designs. Tyson himself has mentioned that he appreciates the cultural significance of tribal tattoos, and he has embraced elements of this art form to create his own unique tattoo.
